    Style & Philosphy

    My Photographic Approach

Having your photo taken is an intimate experience, ideally one built on a foundation of trust and understanding. You don't need to be best friends, but comfort and a belief in one another are paramount to achieving the most out of the medium. I want to capture you as truly as possible. You need to trust that I will know when to take the shot, and I must trust that you will communicate with me your wants, needs, and feelings as we go along.

I value a relaxed style in my photography and prefer candids and action shots over posed photos with overly-manicured backgrounds. I believe that photography allows us to capture what is, while also giving a glimpse into what could be, if only for a moment.  I shoot in a documentarian style, which means making the most of my environment without heavy equipment and additional lighting.  I seek to tell stories with my photographs, whether it be a literal adventure or life-cycle event, or merely a few moments of macro with a flower that captures perhaps an acute mood or one I seek to add later in editing.  In this way, photography too, is also a process of not only recall, but of creation.  I value both the real and aesthetically stylized, but I am seeking to show a point of view, whether my own or that of a client, when taking pictures.

My deeply-held preference is to utilize natural lighting, and work with the excellent editing technologies available to us on the back-end if necessary, rather than creating a completely artifical enviornment and then hoping you act naturally. However, every situation is different and I am always willing to work with a client to make them comfortable and realize their vision. My approach, whether it is a private shoot or I am wandering through a live event, is to be as unobtrusive as possible, and to tell a story with my photos that would be evocative even for those not present for the event or shoot itself.
